Special Transit Services

The following transit services are designed to meet special needs and to fill in the gaps between regular service hours.

AATA MRide

All active University of Michigan-Ann Arbor faculty, staff, temporaries, and students can ride any regularly scheduled AATA (Ann Arbor Transportation Authority) bus service at any time of day, any day of the week, without paying a fare by presenting a valid MCard ID (yellow) to the bus driver.

AATA Park & Ride Program

The AATA Park & Ride program provides free parking and free rides from five parking locations to/from several U-M locations, on weekdays only. Just present your MCard ID to the driver when boarding.

Park & Ride Locations:

  • Ann Arbor Pioneer High School (Stadium Blvd. at Main St.): AATA Routes 7, 14, 16
  • Maple Village Shopping Center (Maple Rd., between Dexter Ave. & Jackson Ave.): AATA Routes 9U, 12 A & 12B
  • Miller Road Lot (south side of Miller Rd. at M14): AATA Routes 12U Miller
  • Lot NC37 (Green Road, near Baxter Road): AATA Routes 2 & 22
  • Lot SC34 (South State Street, across from car dealership): AATA Route 36

AATA Route 36

The University has contracted with the Ann Arbor Transportation Authority to provide bus service between the Wolverine Tower and Central Campus. To ride for free, faculty, staff and students must present their UM Mcard to the driver. Service runs Monday - Friday, approximately every 12-15 minutes from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm, and every 30 minutes from 6:30 pm to 9:55 pm from the Michigan Union. The route ends at the Wolverine Tower at 10:15 pm.

Bus service that circulates in downtown Ann Arbor between Oxford Housing, Central Campus, Liberty and Main Street from 7 am to 6 pm, Monday through Friday. Service after 6 pm until 11 pm connects the Oxford/Trotter area with Central Campus. Rides are free through April 28, 2006. For detailed route information, see www.theride.org. (external link)

Night Ride

Shared-ride taxi service within Ann Arbor (when regularly scheduled AATA bus service is not available) seven days a week, Monday through Friday, 11:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. and Saturday and Sunday, 7:00 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. Fee is $5 per person. Also available on all major holidays.

Ride Home

Free shared-ride taxi service for students, faculty, and staff to their residence halls, parked vehicles, or local residence. This service is available after University transit buses and shuttles have concluded daily service: from 2:00 a.m. through 7:00 a.m., seven days a week. Please note you must show the driver your valid U-M ID.

On Central Campus, rides are available from the Shapiro Undergraduate Library. To request a ride, call Yellow Cab directly at (734) 663-3355 on the phone provided by the Library.

On North Campus, rides are available from the Duderstadt Center, where the staff books the trips for the passengers.

On Medical Campus, rides are available from 1:20 a.m. through 7:00 a.m. with pickup at MCHC. Please note: when the MCHC entrance closes in Fall 2006, a new location will be announced. To request a ride, call Yellow Cab directly at (734) 663-3355.

S.A.F.E.WALK

S.A.F.E.WALK is a campus accompaniment service that functions as an alternative to walking alone on campus at night. Coordinated by staff at the Department of Public Safety (DPS), S.A.F.E.WALK escorts are free of charge and available to all members of the University community.

During the fall and winter semesters, the service is provided daily from 10:00 p.m.-3:00 a.m. Just call (734) 763-WALK (or (734) 763-9255) to request an escort. An employee from U-M Transportation Services will come to your campus location and drive you to your requested location (within a one-mile driving radius of Central and North campuses). During non-service hours, alternative service providers will be identified by DPS.

Emergency Ride Home

Free taxi rides can be provided in emergency situations for faculty and staff to return to their vehicle parked in remote lots or to any location (home, school, daycare provider, etc.). The service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Use of the program is limited to six times per permit year.

State Street Ride

Free after-hours taxi service from any U-M building to the South State Street Commuter (Park & Ride) lot after buses have concluded daily service. This service is available Monday through Friday from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.

Paratransit

Scheduled door-to-door service for students, faculty, and staff with disabilities. See Services for People with Disabilities to learn more.

Ronald McDonald House

Family members staying at the Ronald McDonald Housecan ride the Mitchell-Glazier shuttle or Commuter busesfrom 7:00 p.m. to1:15 a.m., Monday through Friday.The pick-up site is located at the Maternal and ChildHealth Center (MCHC) circle drive.Please note: whenthe MCHC entrance closes in Fall 2006, a new locationwill be announced. Shuttle service is every 15minutes.Please tell the driver upon boarding the shuttle that youwant drop-off at the Ronald McDonald House.

Taxi Services To/From Satellite Offices

The Health System provides free taxi rides for staff needing to travel between the Medical Campus core and designated satellite offices and clinics not otherwise served by bus or shuttle routes. Service is limited to Faculty and Staff with a valid Mcard for trips either starting or ending at the Medical Campus core to and from authorized satellite offices or clinics only. Check with satellite facility managers or administrators for details.
